Laya is the co-founder of Origen Textil, a textile and natural dye studio in Oaxaca. Originally from Mexico City, Laya moved to Oaxaca four years ago to pursue her passion for textiles and work closer with local artisans. At first, she studied with Maria Romero, learning to make rugs. Then, she met Fernanda Ramirez Toledo, another co-founder of Origen Textil. Frustrated with the realities of fast fashion, they decided to start their own fashion label rooted in ancient, indigenous techniques translated to modern silhouettes. Their studio focuses on circular design and has a zero waste policy. Every item of clothing is handmade from natural fibers (which are biodegradable) and then colored with natural dye.
