OAXACA ITINERARY

DAY ONE

Bienvenidas a Oaxaca mágico! 🌞 You’ll drop our luggage at Teresa Ramirez’s stunningly restored Casa Antonieta, before meeting your amazing Trip Leader Maria José Ruelas and the rest of the group.

In case you missed the memo – you entered textile paradise the moment you stepped foot in Oaxaca! This afternoon we’ll visit the studio of Laya Antonio – founder of Origen Textil – for a crash course on natural dye and a deep dive into the modern-day significance of preserving these ancient traditions.

Afterward, we’ll gather for an unforgettable dinner at one of our favorite women-owned gems—chef Olga Cabrera’s incredible Tierra del Sol.

Meals included: dinner

DAY TWO

Today we’ll make sure you’ve got the lay of the land and – most importantly – the food. Oaxaca is considered a culinary icon by pretty much every chef on the planet, so our first stop is an absolute must: the local mercado. With Betsaida López Díaz as our guide, we’ll taste everything from moles made with dozens of ingredients to banana leaf-wrapped tamales

When we can’t possibly take another bite, you’ll have the rest of the afternoon and evening free to explore.

Meals included: breakfast, lunch

DAY THREE

Time to escape the city’s limits and travel to Teotitlán del Valle to visit Maria Luisa, the matriarch of one of the region’s most revered weaving co-ops, to get an intimate look at the artistry of this indigenous craft (and maybe pick up a rug or two to take home!).

Our next stop is the powerful (yet often-overlooked) Zapotec ruins of Yagul. We’ll spend some time exploring this important archeological site, before visiting the mother-daughter team behind Desde La Eternidad, one of the only women-run mezcal distilleries in Oaxaca. In true Wild Terrains fashion, we’ll head straight to the source and enjoy a magical mezcal tasting and dinner party in the middle of the agave fields. Can you say dreamy?

Meals included: breakfast, light lunch, dinner

DAY FOUR

This morning, we’re diving into the world of plant medicine with the incredible Mafer Bretón, founder of Relato Nativo. Get ready for a hands-on workshop that will connect you to the ancient rituals still thriving in Oaxaca today.

The afternoon is yours to explore, so get ready to treasure hunt! Oaxaca is a paradise for ceramics and textiles, and we’ll point you toward some of our favorite women-owned spots—like 1050 Grados for one-of-a-kind pottery, Xaquixe Studio for stunning handblown glass, and Central Textile (because there’s always room for more textiles in your suitcase!).

As the sun sets, we’ll come together for a final dinner at one of our favorite women-owned restaurants—a perfect way to toast to this unforgettable journey.

Meals included: breakfast, dinner

DAY FIVE

We’ll soak up one last cozy breakfast at Casa Antonieta before we say our goodbyes (for now!). If you're sticking around Mexico, don’t worry—we’ve got plenty of tips to keep the adventure going!

Meals included: breakfast

Please note this is a sample itinerary and some variations will happen between trips due to our partners schedules,
but in general the itinerary will be similar!

WHERE YOU’LL SLEEP

We’re sleeping in style at Casa Antonieta – a former convent and historic mansion converted into a stunning boutique hotel by Teresa Ramirez and her son, Helwig. The hotel sits on a quiet street only a few blocks from the main city square. Each of the 9 rooms is unique, featuring local artwork and luxury bath products. Our favorite perk: the plant-filled rooftop terrace overlooking the city – a perfect spot for a calm sunset cocktail after an adventurous day.

MEET YOUR TRIP LEADER

BEST TIME OF YEAR
TO VISIT

Anytime between October and mid-June.
A note related to responsible travel: Oaxaca becomes especially crowded during the Guelaguetza Festival and Día de Muertos – to the point where we do not believe it is responsible to organize trips here during this holiday. If you are interested in spending Día de Muertos in Mexico, we invite you to check out our Mexico City trips.

WEATHER

Outside of the rainy season (late-June through September), the weather is almost always pleasantly warm and sunny in Oaxaca. We suggest packing layers, as the evenings can be quite cool.
